What is a sentence?

A sentence is a group of words that contains a topic (subject) and a story (predicate). 

These are sentences in English:

1. He is a student.
2. Speed kills.
3. It is not today.
4. He looks tired.
5. Are you hungry?
6. Who is there?
7. The man bought a new car. 
8. Does your sister buy you a new car?

These are not sentences in English: 

9. Hot weather.
10. has various problems
11. She beautiful.
12. Every morning before breakfast.

Subjects

The subject is the topic (who or what the sentence talks about). It will always be a noun or a pronoun.

Subject analysis: terms we will use: 

simple subject = noun = what or who the sentence talks about

details = extra information

pre-details = extra information put before the simple subject

post-details = extra information put behind the simple subject
